Every legitimate product is EPA-registered, and the label on that product is a legally binding document that dictates where it can go, at what rate, and how people and pets should behave around it. A company that will not tell you exactly what it applies is failing the easiest honesty test in the industry.
The active ingredients, plainly
The EPA's page on controlling adult mosquitoes lists the insecticides commonly used against adults, including the synthetic pyrethroids prallethrin, etofenprox, permethrin, resmethrin, and sumithrin, plus natural pyrethrins. Residential barrier products draw from the same pyrethroid family, with bifenthrin and lambda-cyhalothrin also common in professional formulations. Some services add an insect growth regulator, which interferes with immature insects developing, to stretch effectiveness between visits.
Two properties make pyrethroids the default for barrier work:
- They bind to surfaces and persist. Applied to foliage, they keep working after drying, so mosquitoes landing on treated leaves over the following weeks contact the active ingredient.
- They break down in the environment. Sunlight and weather degrade them over weeks, which is why protection fades and the re-treat rhythm exists, and also why they do not build up season over season.
Where it goes, and where it should not
University of Kentucky extension entomologists describe the homeowner version of this application in ENTFACT-005: insecticide applied to the lower limbs of shade trees, shrubs, and other shaded areas such as under decks and along foundations, the places adult mosquitoes rest during the day. A professional treatment is the same idea with better coverage judgment: dense foliage, fence lines, the shaded north side of structures, under-deck voids.
Just as important is where treatment should not go:
- Not on blooming plants that pollinators are working. Pyrethroids are toxic to bees on contact, and labels carry pollinator protection language for exactly that reason. The honest practice is to skip open blooms, treat resting foliage instead, and time applications away from active foraging.
- Not on play equipment, dining surfaces, or vegetable gardens. The target is mosquito resting habitat, not the places your family touches and eats.

What "safe for kids and pets once dry" actually means
You will hear this phrase from every service, including ours, so here is its real content. Product labels direct that people and pets stay off treated areas until the application has dried. Drying typically takes a modest window depending on weather, and once dry, the residue is bound to the treated surface rather than transferring on contact, which is the basis for the label's re-entry direction. The EPA's registration process evaluates these products for their labeled uses, including assessing risks to vulnerable groups; the agency notes on its adult mosquito control page that applications made according to label directions do not pose risks of concern to the general population, including children and pregnant women.
The phrase is honest when it carries its conditions: applied per label, kept to target surfaces, re-entry after drying. It becomes dishonest when it gets shortened to "totally harmless," which no pesticide is and no label claims. Are natural or botanical sprays a gentler alternative?
Botanical options exist, including pyrethrins and plant-oil products, and some services offer them. They are still pesticides with labels and precautions, and they generally trade shorter residual life for their sourcing, which means tighter re-treat intervals. Will the treatment kill bees and butterflies?
