A mosquito goes from egg to biting adult in roughly two weeks under typical conditions, and in hot weather the whole cycle can finish in as little as four days. Every stage before the adult happens in or right next to standing water, which is why the water in your own yard, not the woods behind it, decides how bad your evenings get.
That timeline comes from the EPA's mosquito life cycle overview, which describes a cycle that typically takes up to two weeks but can range from 4 days to as long as a month depending on temperature, food, and species. Understanding the four stages tells you exactly where control works and where it fails.
Stage 1: the egg, laid where water will be
After a female mosquito takes a blood meal, she lays eggs directly on or near water, on damp soil, or at the base of plants in places that may fill with water. She does not need a pond. A plant saucer, a clogged gutter, or the fold of a tarp is plenty.
Two details make eggs the sneakiest stage:
- Eggs can wait. Per the EPA, mosquito eggs can survive dry conditions for a few months. A container that looks bone dry in April can hatch in May with the first good rain.
- Hatching is triggered by water. The egg hatches when exposed to water, so anything that refills, like a saucer under a watered plant, restarts the clock again and again.
Stage 2: the larva, a "wriggler" living in the water
The larva is fully aquatic. It lives in the water, feeds, and molts several times, and in most species it hangs just under the surface and comes up to breathe air. If you have ever looked into a bucket of old rainwater and seen little comma-shaped things twitching away from your shadow, those were mosquito larvae.
This stage is the best place to break the cycle, for a simple reason: larvae are trapped. They cannot leave the water, so if you dump the water, they die, and if the water cannot be dumped, a targeted larvicide such as Bti works on them while they are concentrated in one small place. Stage 3: the pupa, the "tumbler"
The pupa also lives in the water but no longer feeds. It is a transition case, the mosquito equivalent of a chrysalis, and it lasts from about two days to a week before the adult emerges from the pupal case at the water surface. Pupae are hard to kill with larvicides that work through feeding, which is one more reason acting early beats acting late.
Stage 4: the adult, and the part you actually feel
The adult emerges, rests until its body hardens, and gets to work. Males feed on nectar. Females seek blood to develop eggs, and around homes they hunt mostly in the low, shaded, humid layer of your yard. Between hunts, adults rest on shaded vegetation: the underside of leaves, dense shrubs, the cool foliage along a fence line or under a deck.
Those resting spots matter because they are treatable. A residual barrier treatment applied to that vegetation keeps working after it dries, so adults that land there pick up a lethal dose. Why the cycle length decides your treatment rhythm
Here is the math that most one-time sprays ignore. Suppose a treatment knocks down the adults in your yard today. If any standing water on or near your property is still producing, a new generation of adults can be flying in that same yard in one to two weeks, because the cycle typically completes in about that time and faster in midsummer heat.
So protection is a rhythm, not an event:
- Kill the source so fewer new adults ever emerge.
- Hold a treated perimeter so emerging and arriving adults contact treated surfaces.
- Re-treat on a 10 to 14 day cadence so the residual never fades below useful strength while a new generation is emerging.
